Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management

The new online health information management program at UIC is a new delivery option of our traditional bachelor’s program, which was first offered on campus in 1965.  As with the traditional course of study, the online HIM program will deliver high quality education infused with the ethical standards of the HIM industry and strong student involvement within the profession. The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Health Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

UIC’s HIM program was designed to prepare graduates to take the prestigious Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam.  The degree program provides skilled instruction in the management and use of information and information systems for health care planning and provision, resource allocation, and executive decision-making. We offer a two-year, full-time program or part-time program completed over three years. Both options have three start dates a year; fall, summer, and winter-spring.

The UIC Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management degree offers admission to most associates degree graduates in good academic standing, who can complete the program in as little as 63 credit hours. A Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential is not required for admission.  If a student has earned an RHIT credential, they can graduate in as few as 32 credit hours.

100% of graduating UIC Health Information Management students received “satisfactory” ratings or above from employers as surveyed one year following graduation. Employer comments regarding the strengths of our graduates include: “Able to think critically, problem solver.” “Solid knowledge of HIM domains. Collaborates well with colleagues.”

Graduates are eligible to sit for the RHIA exam which leads to credential.  This program does not lead to licensure.

* Proficiency Credit  -Graduates of an associate’s degree program in Health Information Technology accredited by the Commission on Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIM), who also hold current Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification; or who provide a transcript of equivalent course work and demonstrate proficiency by exam, may receive up to 24 hours of proficiency credit.

**Students with a current CPC, CCA, CCS, CCS-P coding credential and demonstrate proficiency via an exam, may receive proficiency credit for BHIS 432 and BHIS 433.
