IT Training Director
An IT training director is responsible for the overall planning, development and implementation of informational technology training programs for new and existing staff in the hospital or health care facility. This role is critical in keeping information flowing through the hospital by ensuring that all staff, both medical and clerical, is using the correct data entry programs and completing the required electronic forms and processes.
- The IT training director must be a creative and dynamic person that enjoys public speaking and teaching. He or she should have an above average working knowledge of the various IT systems used in the hospital as well as issues or problems that are often encountered when using the systems.
- The IT training director must have excellent communication in both written and oral presentations and should be comfortable with using technology such as video-conferencing to assist with training programs. He or she should be able to implement pre-set training programs as well as being able to develop individualized and specific trainings as required by the hospital or health care facility.
- The IT training director usually works closely with department managers, human resources and other interested parties to develop both long and short term goals for staff training and development as it relates to computers and technology.
- An IT training director may be required to work some weekend or evening hours to accommodate for training various individuals in the hospital or health care facility. He or she may participate in conferences and seminars on a regular basis to keep current with new training methods as well as new advances in IT in the hospital workplace.
Career Requirements
- Most IT training directors will have a minimum of a bachelor’s and preferably a master’s in a related field of study such as health informatics, health care or business management, or one of the computing science fields. In addition most positions will require that the individual have some practical experience in working within a hospital or health care facility in informatics or information processing.
- Some IT training directors may have a nursing background in addition to experience with computers. Often hospital or healthcare facilities hire from within for training directors, especially if the person has experience with the computer systems used in the facility and have proven themselves to be leaders and teachers.
