Health information exchanges are becoming more popular in hospitals, but still need work

Experts said at the recent Health Information Management Systems Society Annual Conference and Exhibition that data exchanges are becoming more prominent as a requirement for meaningful use, NHIN Watch reports.

Some experts stress the importance of focusing on an effort to help patients and developing trust among healthcare providers.

Health Choice Network recently entered an agreement with Florida’s health information exchange system. Under the partnership, participants must provide healthcare data such as all patient encounter information to the state. As a result, officials will determine policy and procedures that will govern how the health information exchange system will be used.

Health information technologies represent growing market in the healthcare industry. Many hospitals are seeking individuals who have obtained a health information management degree to help develop and administer these systems in their facilities

According to a 2008 report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics new employment opportunities in the health information management field are expected to increase by 20 percent by 2018.
