At a recent conference held by the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM), leading researchers discussed trends in the role that health informatics plays in radiology in the modern healthcare system, reports CMIO.
A list of the top 10 trends was presented by Katherine Andriole, the director of imaging informatics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, during the annual SIIM meeting in Washington, D.C. According to its website, the SIIM – which was formerly known as the Society for Computer Applications in Radiology – works to integrate evolving imaging technology and information systems with current practices in the field of medicine.
The top item on Andriole’s list was the issue of radiation dose safety. While some patients have been affected by overdoses from X-rays, she suggested that proper use of health informatics could help healthcare professionals keep track of the amount of radiation to which people have been exposed.
Mathew B. Morgan, a radiologist from the University of Utah Hospital, agreed, saying that “this is a recipe for regulation – or, an opportunity [for radiologists] to address this concern.”
The second trend highlighted by Andriole was the issue of meaningful use, as many radiologists around the country struggle to find ways to integrate imaging informatics systems into their daily work in a useful manner.
Andriole also pointed out how business analytics, data mining and workflow, as informatics allow radiology departments to optimize the ways in which administrative resources are utilized.
The presentation also stressed how cloud computing could help provide doctors with a greater base of information to draw from while putting together a diagnosis.
Other items on Andriole’s list include avoiding repeat imaging, image sharing, quantitative imaging, mobile devices, personal health records and artificial intelligence.
