Duke to integrate M*Modal voice recognition technology into Epic medical informatics solution

Officials from Duke University Health System (DUHS) confirmed that they have chosen M*Modal’s voice recognition software as part of their Epic medical informatics solution, reports Healthcare IT News.

More than 1,000 physicians and healthcare providers stand to benefit from the voice recognition tools, and representatives from DUHS claim that the technology will enable doctors to input patient health information into clinical informatics networks more effectively and extract actionable information from existing medical records.

“Our primary commitment to providing optimal care to patients throughout Duke University Health System includes the need to support our providers with superior clinical documentation tools,” Art Glasgow, chief information officer of DUHS, told the news source. “We’re confident that this technology will effectively support our system-wide implementation of an electronic health record by providing more options for providers to efficiently capture critically important information and leverage this data for improved care decisions.”

M*Modal’s voice recognition software can be easily deployed to existing medical informatics clients as the system is cloud based. This method of software deployment has the potential to reduce costs for participating healthcare providers, as there is no need to install additional healthcare IT infrastructure. Connectivity and interoperability concerns can also be more easily addressed using cloud-based software.

The Tennessee-based software company is considered a leader in the field of voice recognition technology. Recently, officials at Cymetrix, a healthcare revenue cycle management solutions company, announced a partnership with M*Modal to improve the clinical documentation process at Cymetrix’s member healthcare facilities.

Using M*Modal’s speech recognition technology, Cymetrix subscribers will be able to lower operational costs, improve overall reporting efficiency and enhance the transparency of patient data reporting and analysis procedures, according to a press release.
