UIC Launches Online Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Information Management

CHICAGO, IL – The University of Illinois at Chicago is launching a fully online, distance learning  Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (HIM) degree through its College of Applied Health Sciences.  The first in-take of students for this new distance program is fall 2012 and UIC is currently accepting enrollment applications.  UIC introduced the campus BS HIM program in 1965 and is thrilled to introduce the program online to meet the needs of health information management professionals worldwide.   “We look forward to delivering this essential program in an online format,” says Karen Patena, UIC Program Director.  “The health information management field has experienced substantial growth in recent years, and many working professionals are looking for opportunities to update and expand their skill set.” Patena says that online delivery of a Bachelor of Science degree from a recognized university is very attractive to practitioners in the field as well as students who are looking for new career opportunities.  “Our experience as a leader in both health information management and online health education naturally positions UIC to offer our four-year HIM degree to students from all over the country.  We can offer students both the education and support they need to be successful in learning modality.”

The program offers a rigorous curriculum in health information management to prospective students with an associate degree in good academic standing.  A Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) is not required for admission.  As with the traditional course of study, the online HIM program will deliver a high quality education infused with ethical standards of our industry and strong student involvement in the profession. The UIC HIM program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Health Information Management Education (CAHIIM), making students eligible to take the prestigious Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam upon graduation.
