GE Healthcare has released an application for the Apple iPad that is intended to enable physicians and healthcare professionals to access patient data from electronic medical records (EMR’s).
The Centricity Advance-Mobile application provides doctors with full interoperability functionality to the Centricity Advance practice management system from their iPad. The program allows physicians to respond to patient requests to refill medication prescriptions and answer questions, in addition to enabling doctors to request, verify and dispatch prescriptions to specific pharmacies, all from their tablet.
Dr. Medhavi Jogi, an endocrinologist in Houston, Texas, said that “Now I can use my iPad exactly as I’d use a notepad and I don’t miss a single point of communication with the patient. Better still, it eliminates the perceived barrier that some patients feel when I’m sitting at a computer entering data. It’s a much more natural form of interaction.”
GE Healthcare’s Centricity Advance EMR system was designed to enable anytime, anywhere access to patient data for physicians, and to enable patients to interact with their healthcare providers in a secure way from their home computers or mobile devices. Patients can access the web portal system through a unique, secure user identification system, and interact with their doctors wherever they are through a user-friendly interface. Patients can also access data such as test results, reschedule appointments and request prescriptions through the system.
Mike Friguletto, general manager and vice president of GE Healthcare IT’s clinical business solutions department, told Information Week that “What’s new is an entirely native iPad app and physician workflow. This portal provides a new view that is different than what a physician would see in logging into the software.”
Cloud-based systems such as Centricity Advance have been aimed at smaller healthcare providers and facilities, due to the potential for scalable deployment and the lack of a substantial initial investment in hardware or healthcare IT infrastructure.
