A recent study by the University of California, San Diego reveals that the most popular careers for recent college graduates are in the health information technology (IT) field.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that professionals in this industry can work in many fast-growing positions. This increase in healthcare IT jobs comes largely from recent federal programs that encourage facilities to use health informatics tools such as electronic health and medical records.
Mark Cafferty, president and chief executive officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership, said that health IT students will accomplish more than finding many job opportunities after graduation. They will also change the healthcare industry.
“The injection of skilled knowledge workers into the magnet of healthcare information technology will not only provide solutions to immediate needs, but also will serve as a catalyst for new and emerging types of jobs in the coming years as the impact of healthcare IT takes hold,” he said.
Students who want to land one of the many jobs in this field after graduation can earn credentials such as a health informatics degree or a health information management degree.
