Hear from a former graduate on how the program has prepared her to enter the industry workforce.
My name is Amber Qureishi and I am graduating from health information management program. There are two reasons why I chose UIC. One was of course the academic reputation for UIC, and secondly, this is the only university in this area which was offering this degree that I wanted online. I chose online learning because I have two young kids and I wanted to stay at home with my children. It was more of a convenience and to be with my kids while I go to school. My degree will help my career by preparing me better for the all the upcoming and new changes in the health care industry. The whole experience was actually a matter of fact very interactive. We constantly communicated with teachers, they’re always available.
I got to meet and become friends with a lot of other UIC students in the program. That was quite surprising. I thought it would be kind of you’re on your own kind of thing and you’re reading and not getting much from other students and teachers, but it was not. It was a great experience. It was, I would say as interactive and as engaging as being an on-site student. The advice I would give to new students would be don’t be afraid. I know, it’s intimidating to go into distance learning. It is a lot to take in, but it all comes together. When I started school, I honestly did not know how well this is going to go. I’ve never met a online student who had completed the entire degree online.
I feel like I have learned a lot. I did an internship and there was an on-site student. The information we exchanged, the projects we worked on, and I discussed all these things with her. I just did not feel like I missed out on any chunk information that they have more than I do. It was a great experience.
